Artists Helping Others

By janirene

Theresa Wells Stifel, founder of Stifel & Capra art and ornament shop in Falls Church is giving back to the community after her first successful year in business. She has announced a two day juried art show and sale of local art to benefit well regarded local charities: Homestretch and CHO (Committee for Helping Others).

CHO ( http://www.cho-va.com/) is an all-volunteer organization that was organized in 1969 by a group of concerned churches and individuals in the Dunn Loring / Merrifield / Oakton / Vienna community to provide simple, loving charity to those in need of goods and services which they are unable to provide for themselves or obtain from governmental social service organizations. Membership in CHO is open to all churches, synagogues, civic and service organizations, and individuals interested in improving the quality of life for all in the community.

The Vienna-Tyson’s Regional Chamber of Commerce selected Homestretch as the 2007 Nonprofit Member of the Year. Homestretch (http://www.homestretch.org/) founded in 1990, is the largest provider of transitional housing and services for homeless families with children in Northern Virginia. In addition to providing subsidized housing, the comprehensive program offers job counseling, credit counseling, ESL classes, computer training, life skills training, domestic violence and substance abuse counseling, family mentoring, and children's programs - all aimed at helping families get on their feet and stay that way. A unique evaluation system tracks a family's progress from the time they enter the program to up to two years after they graduate.

“It is exciting to put a show like this together.” comments Stifel and Capra founder, Theresa Wells Stifel. “To be able to introduce more people in the community not only to the wealth of art talent in our neighborhood but to educate them about what these two exemplary organizations do is a privilege. If a person is interested in helping with the August 22 and 23rd show they can find information about it on the website: (http://stifelandcapra.blogspot.com/).
